The Importance of Water Tanks and Clean Water

Contaminated water can lead to several health issues, and many families without safe water are at risk. The rural areas of many countries have no access to clean water and sanitation. Water is a precious resource but unfortunately many people remain uneducated about water management.

In Bangladesh, about half of the country’s 12 million tube wells are found to contain harmful levels of arsenic, simply because the tubes were not dug deep enough, at least 100 meters deep. Bangladeshi government officials were either unaware of depth regulations, or they did not supervise installation correctly. The question is how many people were poisoned in this way?

Drinking arsenic-contaminated water may not kill you, but it will make you seriously ill. The threat of arsenic poisoning exists all over the world because of contaminated water sources. In 70 countries, 140 million people have been touched by contaminated water.

These figures should scare authorities into taking action to avoid further damage. Make sure that you check all of your plumbing on a regular basis. Governments in developing nations are working hard, and have spent millions of water projects.

To date no water contamination deaths have been reported in Bangladesh, but the government must take control before that happens. It has been reported that Bangladesh has received international money to improve the situation. Sadly, it appears the government has not yet taken action.

There are more serious cases in other parts of the world. Many children under 5 have died in developing countries because of water related sicknesses. Statistics suggest that as many as 90% of death from water-related diarrhea are children, because they have not eaten enough to fight off infections.

769000 African children under the age of 5 died between 2000 and 2003 because of water-related diarrhea. If one clean water tank had been set up in each of these high-risk areas, countless lives could have been saved. The developed world suffered 700 deaths from similar ailments during that period.

If clean water supplies are introduced, these figures will drop by up to 25%. Cases of diarrhea have been reduced by 39% thanks to correct processing of water. The ideal is that all countries follow this example.

Meanwhile, studies have determined that around the world, the most common water contamination is from sewage, which means, in some parts of the world, human fecal parasites are making their way into consumable drinking water. This is a disturbing revelation. The figures speak for themselves - in 2006, 1.1 billion people did not have healthy water, and 1.8 billion died from water-related sickness.

If access to clean water is increased, such deaths will decrease. For very little money, Water Tanks, filters, and purifiers can be placed to save lives. Safe, efficient distribution of water can help to keep many homes safe.
